Which Documents Need Arabic Translation for a UAE Golden Visa?
A plain guide to what gets translated, what doesn't, and the order to do it in, so your application isn't sent back over paperwork.
Not everything. Documents already in Arabic or English are usually accepted as they are. Anything in another language needs a legal translation, and family documents such as marriage and birth certificates are the ones most often asked for in Arabic. The translation should be done after attestation, by a translator the UAE authorities recognise.
The rule behind the paperwork
القاعدةArabic is the official language of the UAE, and government files are kept in Arabic. In practice, immigration authorities also work in English, so an English passport, degree or bank letter is normally fine on its own.
The trouble starts with everything else: a French birth certificate, a German company register extract, a Chinese degree, a Russian marriage certificate. These need a legal translation (ترجمة قانونية), which in the UAE means a translation made and stamped by a translator licensed by the Ministry of Justice. A translation from an ordinary agency abroad, or from an AI tool, does not carry that stamp and will not be accepted for official use.
Document by document
المستنداتHere is how the common Golden Visa documents usually fall. The Arabic name is the one you will see on forms and in typing-centre requests.
Passports are read as they are. Make sure the name spelling here is the one used everywhere else.
Needed to sponsor a spouse. Commonly requested attested and legally translated into Arabic.
Needed to sponsor children. Same treatment as the marriage certificate.
An attested degree in English is normally accepted. Any other language needs a legal translation.
UAE banks and employers issue these in Arabic or English. Statements from a foreign bank in another language need translating.
Issued by the land department in the UAE, so it is already in the right language.
Incorporation documents, registers and board resolutions from abroad, when used to prove an investment.
If someone is acting for you in the UAE, the document they rely on needs to be in Arabic or bilingual.
Requirements differ between emirates and between Golden Visa categories, and they change. Treat this as a starting point and confirm the list for your own case before you pay for anything.
What changes with your route
حسب الفئةThe Golden Visa has several routes, and each one moves the translation work to a different place.
Property investor
مستثمر عقاريYour title deed is local, so there is little to translate for yourself. Most of the work is family documents, plus proof of funds if it comes from a bank abroad.
Skilled professional
أصحاب المهاراتThe degree is the key document. If it was issued outside the English-speaking world, plan for attestation and translation of both the certificate and the transcript.
Business owner or investor
مستثمرThe heaviest load. Foreign company records, audited accounts and shareholder documents often run to many pages and use specialist legal terms.
Family members
أفراد الأسرةWhatever your own route, each dependant needs proof of the relationship. This is where an Arabic translation is asked for most consistently.
Attest first, translate second
الترتيب الصحيحAttestation (تصديق) proves the document is real. Translation makes it readable. The order matters because every attestation adds stamps and signatures, and those need to appear in the translation too.
- ١Attest in the country of issueUsually a notary, then the foreign ministry, then the UAE embassy there. Countries in the Hague Apostille system follow a different path, so check which applies to you.
- ٢Complete attestation in the UAEThe UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs adds the final stamp once the document arrives.
- ٣Get the legal translationThe translator works from the fully stamped document, so nothing is missing from the Arabic version.
- ٤Submit both togetherKeep the original, the attestation and the translation as one set. Authorities expect to see them side by side.
Four mistakes that cause delays
أخطاء شائعة- Names that don't match. Arabic has no single fixed spelling for foreign names. If your name is written one way on the translated marriage certificate and another way on your visa file, expect questions. Give your translator your passport and any existing Emirates ID so every document uses the same spelling.
- Translating too early. A translation made before attestation leaves out the stamps, and often has to be redone and paid for twice.
- Using a translation from home. A certified translation that works in London or Sydney is not automatically valid in the UAE. What counts is who stamped it.
- Trusting machine translation for official papers. AI is useful for understanding a document. It cannot stamp one, and a small error in a date or a name is enough for a rejection.
Before you send anything
قائمة التحقق- List every document for you and each dependant
- Note the language each one is written in
- Confirm the required list for your visa route
- Finish attestation before translation
- Share your passport spelling with the translator
- Ask for the translation as a stamped hard copy and a scan
- Check dates and numbers against the original
- Keep originals, stamps and translations together
Questions people ask
أسئلة شائعةMy documents are in English. Do I still need Arabic translations?
For most of them, no. English documents are widely accepted for Golden Visa applications. The usual exceptions are family documents and anything that will later be used in court or with a notary, where Arabic is required.
Can I translate the documents myself?
Not for official use, even if you are fluent. The authorities look for the stamp and details of a licensed legal translator, not the quality of the wording alone.
How long does a legal translation take?
A single certificate is usually quick. Company files with many pages take longer. Attestation is normally the slower part of the process, so start it early and line up the translation while you wait.
Will the same translation work for other things later?
Often yes. A legally translated marriage or birth certificate is also asked for when opening certain bank accounts, registering children at school and dealing with tenancy matters, so keep the stamped copies safe.
